1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

(Gozzo), an island of the Maltese group in the Mediterranean Sea, second in size to Malta. It lies N.W. and 34 m. from the nearest point of Malta, is of oval form, 84 m. in length and 42 m. in extreme breadth, and has an area of nearly 25 m. Its chief town, Victoria, formerly called Rabato (pop. in 1901, 5 0 57) stands near the middle of the island on one of a cluster of steep conical hills, 31-- m. from the port of Migiarro Bay, on the south-east shore, below Fort Chambray. The character of the island is similar to that of Malta. The estimated population in 1907 was 21,911.
