1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

A town and port of entry of Ontario, Canada, and capital of Peterborough county, situated 70 m. N.E. of Toronto, on the Otonabee river and the Grand Trunk and Canadian Pacific railways. Pop. (1901), 11,239. The five falls of the Otonabee at this point, with a total descent of 50 ft., furnish power for a large and increasing number of manufacturing establishments, whilst its canalization as part of the Trent canal gives communication with Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay. Peterborough has an electric railway, and contains important manufactories of electrical machinery and supplies, iron and steel bridges, agricultural implements and cordage, saw, flour and woollen mills.
