Poniard

1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

PONIARD, a dagger, particularly one of small size, used for stabbing at close quarters. The French word poignard, from which the English is a 16th-century adaptation, is formed from going, fist, the clenched hand in which the weapon is grasped. (See DAGGER.)
