a residential parish in the borough of Southend-on-Sea, and in the S.E. parliamentary division of Essex, England; lying r 2 m. inland (N.N.W.) from Southend, with a station on the Southend branch of the Great Eastern railway. The church of St Mary the Virgin has fine Perpendicular work and traces of Norman work. There are fragments of a Cluniac priory of the 12th century. Pop. (1901), 27,245.
