1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

(Gr. povcg81a), the art of versification (see VERSE), including as its three divisions accent, breathing and quantity. Prosody is the mode in which the discipline is determined by which successive syllables are so arranged as to form verse. The Latin name for it was accentus.
