1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

in meteorology, an irregular fluctuation of the barometer, extending over a long period (e.g. a month), in contradistinction to the shorter fluctuations, covering two or three days, caused by alternating conditions of high and low pressure. The cause of surges is not understood.
