Auranus

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(Αὔρανος ), given as the name of the leader in the riots at Jerusalem against Lysimachus (2 Maccabees 4:40), where he is described as "a man far gone in years, and no less in folly." Other MSS., however (followed by the Vulg.), read Τύραννος , Tyrannus, which may be taken either as a proper name or appellative, q. d. ringleader.
