Bamberger, Johann Peter

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

a Protestant theologian of Germany, was born at Magdeburg in 1722. For a number of years he preached at the Reformed Church in Berlin, and at Trinity Church there. In 1780 he was appointed court and garrison preacher at Potsdam, and died Sept. 4, 1804. Besides his own Sermons, he published translations from the English, and thus introduced Hoadlvy Lowth, Benson, Anderson, Farmer, Entik, Watson, Knox, Gerard, and others to the German public. He also published the British Theological Magazine (1769-74, 4 vols.), and a Collection of Biographical and Literary Anecdotes formed the basis of his Salmmlung biographischer und literarischer Anekdoten von den beoiihmtesten grossbrittanischen Gelehrten des XVIII.
