Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(Βανίας v. r. Βανί; Vulg. Bania), the ancestor or family-head of one of the parties (that of Assalimoth, son of Josa, with 160 retainers) that returned from Babylon with Ezra (1 Esdras 8:36). This represents a name, BANI (See BANI) (q v.), which has apparently escaped from the present Hebrew text (Ezra 8:10).
