a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church South, was born in North Carolina, Feb. 28, 1799. He was converted in early life, but did not join any religious sect until about thirty-five years of age. He moved to Tennessee when about eighteen, was licensed to preach in 1841, spent eleven zealous, laborious years in the local ranks, and then, in 1852, entered the Memphis Conference, in which he served as health permitted, until his death, July 26, 1874. Mr. Bell had very limited educational privileges in early life, but by persistent .personal application became a well-read man.
