a minister of the Society of Friends in Great Britain, was born near Crediton, in Devonshire, in 1796. Through the influence of an older sister, who was a Wesleyan, he was led to Christ, and united with the Friends in 1823. He enjoyed the advantages of a liberal education, and during the years of his active business life was always a leader in the temperance and educational interests of the community. In 1827 he relinquished his business occupation, and opened a school, which was unsuccessful. He died in Torquay, August 8, 1880. He never travelled as a minister, but exercised his gifts among the people with whom he happened to be living. His preaching was "usually clear and weighty in its character." See (Lond.)
