Theodos. xiv, 7, 2, as applied to a guild of such persons, and has no direct connection with ecclesiastical antiquity. Bingham, however (xvi, 5, 6), cites the passage in its bearing upon the mention of centurions by the council in Trullo (c. 61) as connected with divination; and hence it appears in the index to his work as the name of a sort of conjurers." The cantabrum itself is mentioned by Minucius Felix (Octanv. c. 27) and Tertullian (Apol. c. 16.), as an instance of the unconscious honor' paid by' the heathens to the figure of the cross.
