Carpenter, John (3), D.D.

an Irish prelate, was born in Chancery Lane, Dublin, and was educated in the university at Lisbon. On his return to his native city he was appointed curate in St. Mary's parish chapel. He was consecrated to the see of Dublin, June 3, 1770, by the Catholic primate, assisted by several others. In November, 1778, Carpenter, at the head of seventy of his clergy, and several hundred Roman Catholic laity, attended at the court of the king's bench in Dublin, and took the oaths prescribed by the act for the relief of Roman Catholics in that kingdom.
