a Baptist minister, was born at Georgetown (then Rowley), Mass., Jan. 2, 1776; graduated at Brown University in 1799, and took charge of the Baptist Church in Danvers, Mass., about 1802. In 1817 he became principal of a theological school in Waterville, Me., of which, after its being chartered as Waterville College in 1820, he was elected President. He held the office thirteen years with great success. He was made D.D. by the College of South Carolina in 1819. In 1833 he resigned the presidency of the college, and, after preaching for some time at Rowley, Mass., and at Willington, Conn., finally settled at Hamilton, N.Y., where he died suddenly, May 7th, 1841.
