Coccopani, Giovanni

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

an Italian painter and architect, was born at Florence in 1582, and executed a number of pictures for the churches of Lombardy. In 1622 he was invited to Vienna, where he was employed by the emperor in the wars as state engineer. He was appointed professor of mathematics at Florence on the death of Castelli, and was afterwards invited to Rome to fill the chair in the academy of that city, but he refused to quit Florence.
