Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(Heb. Dathan', דָּתָן, welled, q. d. Fontanus; Sept. Δαθάν; Joseph. Δάθαμνος, Ant. 4:2, 2), a Reubenite chieftain, son of Eliab, who joined the conspiracy of Korah (q.v.) the Levite, and with his accomplices was swallowed up by an earthquake (Numbers 16:1; Numbers 26:9; Deuteronomy 11:6; Psalms 106:17; comp. Sirach 45:18). B.C. cir. 1618. (See EXODE).
