(ἠλί, for Hebrews אֵלַי [Psalms 22:2], eli', my God, as it is immediately rendered), an exclamation used by our Savior on the cross, in appeal to his heavenly Father (Matthew 27:46). (See AGONY). In the parallel passage (Mark 15:34) it is written Ε᾿λωϊ v, ELOI (See ELOI) (q.v.).
