an English Nonconformist, was born at Exeter in 1692, ordained in 1713, and succeeded his father as co-pastor with Mr. Pierce over the Independent congregation at Exeter in 1722. Here he discharged his pastoral duties faithfully until his death in 1744. As a writer, he was marked by industry, learning, and critical sagacity. He wrote a number of controversial tracts on the Evidences of Christianity in reply to Tindal and Chubb, and on the Trinity. Besides these, he published A free and impartial Study of the Holy Scriptures recommended, being notes on peculiar texts of Scripture (Lond. 1729-36. 3 vols. 8vo): — A Paraphrase and Notes on the three last Chapters of the Epistle to the Hebrews (London, 1733, 4to).
