Hugo of Angouleme

flourished in the 10th century. As soon as he had become the incumbent of the see of Angoulê me (March 21, 973) he sought also to assume the temporal government over his diocese, and became entangled in controversies with count Arnold, the prince of that country, against whom he even waged war. It is thought that Hugo finally withdrew from the bishopric, retired to the abbey of St. Cibard, and died in obscurity in 990.
