Jahdai

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(Heb. Yahday', יָהְדָּי , prob. grasper; Sept. Ι᾿αδαϊ v ), a descendant apparently of Caleb, of the family of Hezron; his sons' names are given, but, as his own parentage is not stated (1 Chronicles 2:47), it can only be conjectured that lie was the son of the preceding Gazez, the son (different from the brother) of Haran (1 Chronicles 2:46). B.C. prob. post 1612. Various other suggestions regarding the name have been made, as that Gazez, the name preceding, should be Jahdai (Houbigant, ad loc.); that Jahdai was a concubine of Caleb (Grunenberg quoted by Michaelis, Adnof. ad loc.), etc.; but these are mere groundless suppositions (see Burrington, 1, 216; Bertheau, Comment. ad loc.).
