(JOHANNES SCHOLASTICUS or CLIMACUS). a monk of the latter half of the 6th century, was a zealous partisan of monastic life, and became abbot of a convent on Mount Sinai. He died there about 606. He wrote Κλίμαξ τοῦ παραδείσου , an ascetic mystical work (Latin, Scala paradisi, Ambrosius, Venice, 1531, etc.), which was greatly celebrated and widely circulated among Greek monks for centuries after his death: — Liber ad religiosum postorem, qui est de offcio coenobiarchoe (publ. by Matth.
