Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

primus bishop in the Scotch Episcopal Church, was born at Uras, Kincardineshire, in 1681. He studied at the University of Aberdeen, and in 1713 became pastor of a congregation in Edinburgh. In 1727 he was ordained bishop of Caithness, Orkney, and the Isles, and in 1733 became bishop of Fife. He died in 1757. His principal works are, History of the Affairs of Church and State in Scotland from the beginning of the Reformation to the Retreat of Queen Mary into England, anno 1568 (Edinb. 1734, fol.):-Historical Catalogue of the Scottish Bishops down to the Year 1688, etc. (Edinb. 1755, 4to; new ed. 1824, 8vo). -Chambers and Thomson's Biog.
