(נִעִר , na'ar, often rendered "young man," etc.; N.T. παιδάριον, a little child, the last occurring only John 6:9, and " child" in Matthew 11:16; both terms being originally without respect to sex). The Heb. word occasionally thus rendered in the Auth.Vers., although occasionally standing for a girl or maiden (Genesis 24:14; Genesis 24:16; Genesis 24:28; Genesis 24:55; Genesis 34:3; Genesis 34:12; Deuteronomy 22:15 sq.), for which the fem. noun (נִעֲרָה, naarah') is usually employed, properly denotes a boy, being prob. a primitive word. It is spoken of an infant just born (Exodus ii, 6; Judges 13:5; Judges 13:7; 1 Samuel 4:21), of a boy not yet full grown (Genesis 21:16 sq.; Genesis 22:12; Isaiah 7:16; Isaiah 8:4), and of a youth nearly twenty years old (Genesis 34:19; Genesis 41:12; 1 Kings 3:7; 2 Samuel 18:5; 2 Samuel 18:29).
