Loft

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(עֲלַיָּה , aliy ah', ὑπερῷον), the upper chamber, e.g. of a private house (1 Kings 17:19; Acts 20:9). Such rooms were either over the gate (2 Samuel 19:1) or built on the flat roof (2 Kings 23:12), and were especially used for prayer, conference, or public meetings.
