Mark On the Person

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(in this sense תָּו, tav, Ezekiel 9:4; Ezekiel 9:6; χάραγμα, Revelation 13 sq.), a brand or other character fixed upon the forehead (q.v.), hand, etc., usually of slaves, for the purpose of identifying them. (See SLAVE).

In the case of Cain (Genesis 4:15), a special token (אוֹת, sign, as elsewhere rendered) was assigned him in assurance of safety. (See CAIN).
