Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(φῶς , light), and its allied term Photisma (illumination), are generally applied in the ancient Christian Church to baptism, from the great blessings supposed to arise from it. Hence baptized Christians were sometimes called φωτιζόμενοι, the enlightened, and ithe baptistery φωτιστήριον , place of enlightenment.
