a learned Franciscan monk, was born at Seville in 1557. After entering the order at the age of fourteen, he was carefully advanced in classical learning, and then instructed in theology. As a student, he bore the reputation of great erudition, especially in the Greek, Hebrew, and Oriental languages. He was placed at the head of the Inquisition in Andalusia, and was commissioned by cardinal Zapata to visit the principal libraries of Spain, in order to register those works which might be obnoxious to the Roman Catholic religion. The result of his inquiry was an Index novus Librorum Prohibitorum (Seville, 1631), published by order of cardinal Zapata, grand-inquisitor of Spain. Pineda published a version of Theodore Peltar's Catena Graecorum Patrum in Proverbia Salomonis. He also published Commentarius in Job (Madrid, 1597, 2 vols, fol.): Praelectio sacra in Canticum Canticorum (Seville, 1602): Salomo Prcevius, sive de Rebus Salononis Regis (Lyons, 1609, libri octo): Commentarius in Ecclesiasten (Antwerp, 1620).
