(Heb. Shamhuth', שִׁמְהוּת, prob. desolation; Sept. Σαμαώθ v.r. Σαλαώθ; Vulg. Samaoth), the fifth captain for the fifth month in David's arrangement of his army (1 Chronicles 27:8). B.C. 1020. His designation הִיַּזְרָח, hay-yizrach, i.e. the Yizrach, is perhaps for הִזִּרְחַי, haz-zarchi, the Zarhite, or descendant of Zerah, the son of Judah. From a comparison of the lists in 1 Chronicles 11:27, it would seem that Shamhuth is the same as Shammoth (q.v.) the Harorite.
