Shophan

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(Heb. Shophan', ]שׁוֹפָ, prob. i.q. Shaphan; Sept. Σοφάρ; Samar. שפי ם; Vulg. Sophar), given in the A.V. as one of the fortified towns on the east of Jordan which were taken possession of and rebuilt by the tribe of Gad (Numbers 32:35); but probably a mere affix (significant, according to some, of bareness) to the second Atroth, to distinguish it from the former one, not an independent place. (See ATAROTH).
