(Heb. Tebeth', טֵבֵת, apparently of Assyrian origin, Tibituo), the tenth month (Esther 2:16) of the sacred year of the Hebrews, corresponding in the main to January. Jerome has the following comment upon Ezekiel 29:1 : "Decimus mensis, qui Hebrseis appellatur Tebeth, et apud Egyptios [with whom it was the fifth month] Τύβι [or Τωβί, Coptic Tobi]; apud Romanos. Januarius." In Arabic it is called Tubah, in Greek Τυβί or Τήβ, and in Sanskrit Tapas. (See CALENDAR, JEWISH).
