Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(new soldiers of God), a name given in the early Church, to catechumens, by Tertullian (De Panitent. c. 6) and Augustine (De Fide ad Catechumen. 2, 1), because they were just entering upon that; state which made them soldiers of God and candidates of eternal life.
