Winkler, Hermann Erich

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

a Protestant theologian of Germany, was born April 11, 1738, at Hildesheim. He studied at Gottingen under Walch, Michaelis, and Heilmann. In 1763 he was appointed pastor in his native place; in 1772 accepted a call to Hamburg, where he labored for twenty years; in 1793 was called to Luneburg as superintendent, and while he was delivering his first sermon, on March 13. he was paralyzed, and died a few hours later. Winkler was very well versed in Greek history, philosophy, and literature; Pindar he knew almost by heart. His published writings are of no importance.
