The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia

A surname given in Spain generally to the physician, and also to the secretary and interpreter, of the king. In Spain, Portugal, and Provence it corresponds to the name "Ḽakim," which is the Arabic for "physician" or "sage" ("Jew. Quart. Rev." 10:531).
