The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia

  1. Name of a family, of whom, according to Ezra 2:11 and I Esd. 5:13,623 returned with Zerubbabel. According to Nehemiah 7:16, their number was 628. Twenty-eight more came up with Ezra (Ezra 8:11). Four of the Bene Bebai married foreign wives (Ezra 10:28; I Esd. 9:29). A Bebai signed the covenant with Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:15). The name "Biba" has been found on a tablet from Nippur (see "Cuneiform Texts," ed. Hilprecht, 9:27).
