Beth-Zur

The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia

A city in southern Judea (Joshua 15:58, 1 Chronicles 2:45; Nehemiah 3:16) which was fortified by Rehoboam, (2 Chronicles 11:7). It was a strongly walled place, situated on the eastern boundary-line of Judea. The town was repeatedly besieged during the time of the Maccabees (I Macc. 4:28 et seq., 6:50, 9:52, 10:14, 11:65). Its situation is indicated by the ruins near a hill of BĂȘt-sur, or Burj-sur.
