Gomer

The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia

  1. Eldest son of Japheth, and father of Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah (Genesis 10:2,3; 1 Chronicles 1:5,6). In Yoma 10a and Yer. Meg. 1:9 "Gomer" is explained to be the same as which stands either for ("Cimmerii") or for ("Germany"). In Gen. R. "Gomer" is Africa, and "Magog" is Germany (comp. Lenormant, "Origines," 2:332). Gomer, standing for the whole family, is mentioned in Ezekiel 38:6 as the ally of Gog, the chief of the land of Magog.
  2. Daughter of Diblaim, and wife of the prophet Hosea (Hosea 1:3).
