Mandelli, David

The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia

Hungarian linguist; born about 1780 at Presburg; died at Paris Dec. 22, 1836. He was one of the greatest linguists of his time, and is said to have excelled in his knowledge of foreign languages even the celebrated Cardinal Giuseppe Mezzofanti. The favorite studies of Mandelli were Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Greek, and Latin, from a combination of which he formed a language of his own (Oettinger, "Moniteur des Dates").
