(מְסַלָּה, mesillah´), a raised way (1 Chronicles 26:16; 1 Chronicles 26:18), or stairs of wood ("terrace," 2 Chronicles 9:11). In these passages it apparently refers to an ascent by steps, or a raised slope between Zion and the Temple, which in subsequent times was replaced by the bridge. In 2 Chronicles 9:4, it is called עֲלַיָה(aliyah´), an "ascent." In most of the passages where it occurs, the former word signifies any public road, and is translated "highway."
