City of David

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

a section in the southern part of Jerusalem, embracing Mount Zion, where a fortress of the Jebusites stood. (See JEBUS). David reduced the fortress, and built a new palace and city, to which he gave his own name (1 Chronicles 11:5). Bethlehem, the native town of David, is also called, from that circumstance, the city of David (Luke 2:11).
