Duty

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(דָּבָר, dabar, lit. a word or matter; Gr. ὀφείλω, to owe). For "duty of marriage" (עוֹנָה, onah', dwelling together, Exodus 21:10; used in the Talmud for connubial right; i.q., ὀφειλομένη εὔνοια, "due benevolence," 1 Corinthians 7:3), (See COHABITATION). For "the duty of a husband's brother" (יָבִס, yabas', Deuteronomy 25:5; Deuteronomy 25:7, to marry a deceased brother's childless wife, Genesis 38:8), (See LEVIRATE LAW). (See ETHICS).
