Eleazar ben-Shamna

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

a Jewish teacher of the 2d century, was a pupil of the famous rabbi Akiba. During the-persecution by Hadrian he went to Nisibis, in Babylonia. His recorded maxim was: "Let the honor of thy disciple be dear unto thee as the honor of thine associate; and the honor of thine associate as the fear of thy master; and the fear of thy master as the fear of heaven" (Aboth, 4:17).
