Hamilton, John (1)

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

a Scotch prelate, was made abbot of Paisley in 1525, and went to France to pursue his studies. In 1543 he was made keeper of the privy seal, and soon after lord treasurer. He became bishop of St. Andrews the same year, and in 1545 was translated to the see of Dunkeld. Under the regency of the earl of Moray, he was accused of treason, and hanged publicly, April 1, 1570.
