Lower Parts of the Earth

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(תִּחְתּיּוֹת אֶרֶוֹ ), properly valleys (Isaiah 44:23); hence, by extension, Sheol, or the under-world, as the place of departed spirits (Psalms 63:9; Ephesians 4:9), and by meton any hidden place, as the womb (Psalm 131:15). In the original of Ezekiel 26:20; Ezekiel 32:18; Ezekiel 32:24, the words are transposed, and used in the second sense.
