Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

[an old English term, derived from the French pomme, an apple, and signifying anything round, but now applied only to a part of a saddle] (גְּלּה, gullah, a globular or round thing, a bowl, which it signifies in Ecclesiastes 12:6; Zechariah 4:3), the ball or round ornament on the capital of a column (2 Chronicles 4:12-13; "bowl," 1 Kings 7:41-42).
