Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(in the sing.) is the rendering, in the A.V., of the following Heb. and Gr. words

1. בּוּל, bul, lit. produce ("food," Job 40:20); hence the trunk of a tree ("stock," Isaiah 44:19);

2. גֶּז ע , geza, the stump ("stock," Job 14:8) or trunk ("stem," Isaiah 11:1; "stock," 40:24) of a tree;

3. עֵוֹ, ets (Jeremiah 2:27; Jeremiah 10:8), a tree, or piece of wood, as elsewhere rendered;

4. עֵקֶר, eker, a plant rooted up and then transplanted in a foreign soil (Leviticus 25:47);

5. γένος (Acts 13:26; Philippians 3:5), race, or kindred (as elsewhere rendered). A gazingstock (Nahum 3:6) is רַאַי, roi, a sight (variously rendered elsewhere).
