Vela, Cristobal

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

a Spanish painter, was born at Jaen in 1598. He studied under Pablo de Cespedes and Vincenzio Carducci, and afterwards settled at Cordova, where he was occupied in painting for the churches and convents. Most of his works have perished, or been injured by unskillful restoration. There remain, however, in the convent of St. Augustine at Cordova a series of the prophets by him, well designed. In 1658 he fell into the well of his own house at Cordova and was drowned. See Spooner, Biog. Hist. of the Fine Arts, s.v.
