Walker, James (1), D.D.
the venerable primus of the Scottish Church, bishop of Edinburgh, and Pantonian professor of divinity. No record remains of his birth or early life. He took a regular Scottish college course, graduated at the University of Cambridge, and in 1793, returning to his native country, devoted himself to literature as sub-editor of the third edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. In 1830 he was elected bishop of Edinburgh; also president, or primus, of the ministerial body to which he belonged. He died in 1841.
