Allariz

The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia

A Spanish town in the province of Orense, Galicia, in which, as in Coruña, Ferrol, and Pontevedra, there were Jews as early as the eleventh century. Upon a complaint by the prior of the monastery of Allariz, Isaac Ishmael, the head of the small Jewish community, was notified, 1289, that from that time no Jews would be allowed to live outside of the Jews' quarter, or to congregate on the streets or to appear in public during processions, etc. A similar ordinance existed prohibiting Christians from living in the Jews' quarter, in order that the latter might not be disturbed or molested in their worship or during their festivals. See also Galicia, Spain.
