One of the cities of the Gibeonites (Joshua 9:17) which after the conquest fell to the lot of Benjamin (Joshua 18:25). This possession, however, seems to have been but temporary; for in 2 Samuel 4:3 we find that the inhabitants fled to Gittaim. The name is again found in the post-exilic list of those that returned with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:25; Nehemiah 7:29; "Beroth" I Esd. 5:19). It is the modern El-Bireh (Baedeker-Socin,p. 325; Buhl, "Geographie des Alten Palästina," p. 173).
