Joab ben Jehiel

The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia

Liturgical poet; lived at Rome in the fourteenth century. He belonged to the Beth-El family, and was the author of five piyyuṭim (inserted in the Roman Maḥzor) for Passover, having for their subject the Canticles, and piyyuṭim for Shabu'ot and the New-Year (before "Nishmat"), and for the Day of Atonement (before "Ḳaddish"). In the Roman Maḥzor, also, a prayer entitled "Ashmurot ha-Boḳer" for Thursdays on which the "Taḥanun" is not recited, is signed "Joab"; and a seliḥah bearing the same signature is found in the seliḥot collection at Tripoli. Joab is believed to be identical with the young poet whom Immanuel satirized ("Maḥberot," 8:66).
